Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long will OG tutoring last?
Many new OG students have gaps in foundational literacy skills, such as phonological awareness, letter-sound correspondence, syllabication, spelling, and morphology (the study of word structure). As a result, tutoring generally spans one to three years to address these areas effectively.
2. Where do you offer your services?
I tutor primarily online. This allows me to reach students who may not have access to Orton-Gillingham instruction. I have limited openings for in-person sessions in central New Jersey.
3. Do you provide neuropsychological testing and reporting?
While I do not conduct neuropsychological testing or participate in the diagnosis process, I value the conclusions and recommendations from such reports. I integrate these insights with my own baseline assessments to tailor my instructional approach, ensuring it is informed and effective.
4. What grade levels do you serve?
I work with learners of all ages, from young students to adults.
5. How will I know if my student is making progress?
Progress monitoring is a cornerstone of the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach. I implement this on a micro level after each lesson, maintaining detailed records of skill development. To analyze broader positive trends, I conduct more comprehensive assessments periodically. I share this information with parents on a regular basis, or upon request.
6. If my student has an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), will you coordinate your tutoring with my child’s learning objectives?
While the OG approach is structured and sequential, it is also flexible and individualized. Practically, this means my OG goals always align with a child's IEP. In fact, parents typically find that OG tutoring accelerates their child's literacy-related IEP goals; I document this through periodic diagnostic testing.
